In May 2020, Elizabeth went for a hike in Maine after recovering from an early bout of Covid.
Two hours into the hike, she took a nasty fall and landed in a ditch. Her boyfriend, Mike, carried her on his shoulders out of the woods to safety.
Elizabeth underwent surgery to reconnect her knee to her tibia, leaving a gnarly seven-inch scar. As she recovered, she felt disappointed with the scar care products on the market, which all focused on hiding scars. Elizabeth, however, didn't want to hide it. The mark represented the end of body perfectionism that had plagued her for years and stood as a symbol of her strength and resilience. Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, which highlights the beauty in fractured pottery, the idea of Zissa was born.
Years later, Mike and Elizabeth had a baby together, and an emergency C-section scar became the latest symbol in another journey — one marked by endurance, love, and new life on the other side.
